Gundog
Breeds that traditionally retrieve, point or otherwise hunt shot game. Known as Sporting in the AKC.
Hound
Breeds that hunt by scent or sight and bring down game themselves.
Pastoral
Breeds used to herd livestock. Known as Herding in the AKC.
Terrier
Breeds used to hunt small game and vermin in confined spaces.
Toy
Small breeds often used as companions, though many had original uses.
Utility
Breeds that serve a purpose that is neither hunting nor working. Known as Non-Sporting in AKC.
Working
Breeds that generally guard, though large herders and hunters also in this group.
Oriental
Slim, elegant breeds. Ears are large, heads are thin wedges, tails are long and tapering, noses are long and Romanesque. Most are from South East Asia.
Foreign
Cats not quite as extreme as the Orientals but still generally slim. Once again, large ears, wedge heads, long tails where present. Often breeds that hail from outside of Europe/America.
Semi-Foreign
Breeds that err towards slimness rather than heaviness. Heads here are rounder but not domed, muzzles are still somewhat long, as are bodies.
Semi-Cobby
Breeds that err towards heaviness rather than slimness. Heads are more rounded, ears are smaller, muzzles are shorter and broader, as are bodies.
Cobby
Breeds that are heavy but not massive. They have short legs, thick bodies but are not large cats generally. Ears are smaller, heads are round, muzzles are short, as are tails and bodies.
