Notes

The welsh springer spaniel, or the Tarfgi Cymraeg, as it is called in Wales, is an ancient breed. Red and white spaniels have been found in Wales since Medieval times, orginally kept for bird and small game hunting. The springer worked both as a flusher and retriever. It was first recognized in 1902, when the British kennel club officially divided up the different spaniel varieties.

The welsh springer spaniel should appear symmetrical, compact, strong, lively, rather low-legged with a great deal of willingness to work and endurance. The head should be of medium length with clearly marked stop, medium length and sharply cut muzzle. The ears are set rather low, carried close to the head and shaped like wine leaves. The neck is long, dry and muscular. The body should be rectangular but not long, with a deep chest. Good boning, with straight frontlegs and moderate angulation in hind. The tail is set well and carried rather low. The coat is straight and silky.
