Notes

This usually dark grizzle mountain dog has also been used as a herder in the isolated mountain region from which it got its name. Their long isolation from other breeds mean they have most likely looked the same for centuries.
Unlike most other mountain dogs, the sarplaninac along with its close relative the karst shepherd dog, are usually grizzle in colour.
The breed is believed to have come with the slavics during the 600s.

The sarplaninac should be robust, powerful and muscular with heavy boning. The back is straight and board, the head fairly long with a broad, rounded skull and slight stop. The muzzle is deep and board. The eyes should have a calm and piercing expression. The ears are triangular, set high and carried close to the head. The tail is long and usually carried hanging, though it may be held higher during movement or excitement.
