The english shepherd originates, just like several similar breeds, from english and scottish herding dogs, but is an american breed. It is a so-called ''loose eye'' worker, which means that it has a somewhat more laid-back, less intense working style than for instance the border collie. It has never been kept as a show or trial dog, but rather as a practical worker around the farm. Besides herding, it has also been used as a watchdog and for hunting.
The overall impression should be of a medium sized dog of sturdy balance and harmonious proportions, built for speed and maneuverability. The face should show intelligence.
The head and neck are carried slightly raised, with a wide and flat skull and moderately broad muzzle. The ears are held close to the head, the eyes with a strong and intelligent look.
The neck should be well muscled and arched, into a horizontal back. The chest should be deep and wide, the hips very compact and giving the dog enough strength to spring. The tail should be of moderate length and well plumed. Natural bobtails are also acceptable. The coat is thick and glossy, longer on the neck, backside of legs and tail.
