Notes

The plott is the only coonhound that doesn't originate from the foxhound. Instead, its early relatives were german boar hunting dogs. Jonathan Plott emigrated to the US in 1750, and brought with him a few hounds. These were bred over time for their stamina and gameness, in western North Carolina. Since there was no wild boar in his new country, Plott instead used his dogs to hunt bear. According to legend, he keeps his line pure, without mixing in other breeds.
In 1780, the dogs passed his kennel over to Henry Plott, and shortly after, a hunter from Georgia borrowed a stud to breed with his 'leopard spotted bear dog'. This is the only known introduction of new blood in the plott, but there may have been more crosses in the early 1900s. The breed was recognized by the UKC in 1946.

The plott has a moderately flat head with ears set high and a muzzle of moderate length. The chest is deep with good lung space, the back slightly arched and strong. The tail is strong and carried saber like. The coat is fine to medium coarse, the colour usually brindle.
