Notes

The karst shepherd dog originates from the North-Eastern parts of former Yugoslavia, close to the border of Austria and Italy. Closely related to the Sarplaninac and similar breeds, this cattle herder has been found in its country of origin for many hundred years, but is now becoming rarer. It is an exceptional guard dog, reserved towards strangers, but also friendly, loyal and trust-worthy around its family. It is a strong and robust breed, able to cope with the toughest terrains and temperatures.

The karst shepherd dog should give the impression of a medium sized, strong and agile shepherd dog. The head is noble with soft lines, rather broad skull and slight stop. The muzzle is powerful and of medium length. The eyes should have a calm and trust-worthy expression. The ears are V-shaped, set rather high and long enough to reach the eye corners. The neck is slightly arched, not too long but carrying the head hig, and with the fur forming a large ruff. The body has a deep and rather broad chest, with a straight back. Slight tuck up. The tail is set high and should be long enough to reach the hock. The coat is long, thick and straight, shorter on the head and frontsides of the legs.
