Notes

The 'saarloos wolfhond' was named after its creator, Leendert Saarloos, though he called his hybrids 'european wolfdog'. Saarloos kept many different types of wild and tame animals and one of his projects was to improve the german shepherd by crossing it with wolves. The first litters were born in the 1930's, but it was not until several years after his death (in 1969) that the wolfhound was recognized as its own breed, which was in 1975. Today it is found in several countries beside its homeland, the Netherlands. It is working dog, and rarely barks; it does however howl and whine.

The saarloos wolfhond should appear tall and impressive with a very independent personality, alert and reserved. The head is balanced, wolf-like with the muzzle and skull the same length. It is wedge-shaped with little stop. The eyes should have an alert and reserved expression. The ears are erect, of medium size and rather wide. The neck is dry and muscular. The body should have a well developed chest and strong and straight back. Well angulated legs in front and hind. The tail is set rather low. The coat consists of a longer topcoat and thick undercoat.
