Notes

The welsh terrier, like several other terrier breeds, origiante from the now extinct old english black and tan terrier, and is most likely the breed that most closely resembles it today. The welsh terrier has been kept as a hunter in welsh kennels, together with foxhounds and otterhounds, since at least the 1700's.

The welsh terrier was first shown in dog shows in 1884 in Phllheli, northern Wales. Breeders soon began to breed for a more showy look, and in the early 1900's the breed looked more like a black and tan foxterrier. Rumours say that the breeds were once crossed with each other, and even today welsh terriers are occasionally born with lots of white on them.

The welsh terrier is a robust wirehaired hunting terrier, with a flat skull, little stop and rather long, powerful muzzle. The eyes should have a fearless and lively expression. The ears are small, V-shaped and carried close to the head. Medium neck, slightly arched and elegant. The body has a short back and deep chest. The frontlegs are strong and straight, the hind powerful and rather long with good angulation, especially in the hocks. The tail is set high but should not be carried too far over the back. The coat is hard, wire and very close-laying.
