Notes

The origins of the shetland sheepog is spitz-like farmdogs, rather than herding sheepdogs. The dogs did herd, but their main occupation was to guard the farms. It is believed that the sheltie is related to norwegian and icelandic spitzes, as well as the scottish collie, which it was crossed to several times. The breeders had lengthy discussions on how the shetland sheepdog should look and what it should be called, but in 1914 they agreed on the current name, and breed was finally recognized in 1923.

The shetland sheepdog should appear to be a small, very decorative sheepdog. The head is noble and shaped like a rounded wedge, with flat skull and rounded muzzle. Slight stop. The muzzle and head should be the same length. The ears are small, placed rather close together and carried with tipped over tips when the dog is alert. The neck is muscular, arched and carried proudly. The body is rectangular with a deep chest and straight back. Good boning, with straight frontlegs and well angulated hind. The tail is set low and should be long enough to reach the hock. The coat should have a short, soft and thick undercoat and long, coarse and thick topcoat, longer on the neck, backsides of the legs and tail, forming a thick ruff and well developed trousers.
