The curly coated retriever originates from crossings made in the early 1800's. The dogs used were mainly water retrievers, and the Old Water Spaniel is mentioned, and the breed is believed to be related to the irish water spaniel. These dogs are said to originate from early south-european dogs, but the curly coated retriever is also said to be related to the now extinct Sain John-dog, a small, retriever-like dog, not too different from the modern nova scotia duck tolling retriever, or perhaps a small, thin newfoundland.
The curly coated retriever had its own class on shows even as far back as in 1860. It has always been known for its strong physique, independence and excellent retrieving abilities.
It should give the impression of being large, strong and agile. The head is long with a strong muzzle. The ears are small and set low. The head is quite long, powerful without being coarse. The chest is deep, with only slight tuck up. The legs should be muscular with moderate angulation. The tail should be carried as continuation of the back. The coat is short and soft on the face, the rest of the body is covered in tiny, hard locks - a trademark of the breed.
