Notes

When Alaska was 'discovered' during the 1700's, russian hunters spoke of the inuits' (also knows as malamutes) incredible sleddogs. During the gold rush the first sleddog trials were formed, first just for fun, later with large sums of money in the question. The malamute sleddog was mixed up with many breeds in attempts to get a faster dog, and as a result the original breed type almost went extinct. In the USA, breeders tried to save the malamute sleddog, and in 1926 the breed was recognized by the AKC as the 'Alaskan malamute'.

The alaskan malamute should be strong, rather heavy, built for endurance rather than speed. The head is large with a barely marked stop, broad muzzle and powerful jaws. The ears are set well apart and have a triangular shape. The body is powerful, compact and somewhat rectangular. The paws are broad and round. The tail should preferably be carried over the back without touching it. The coat is thick, hard and not too long.
