The treeing walker coonhound originates from certains trains of english walker coonhounds. The creation of the breed is credited to George Washington Maupin and John W Walker, both from Kentucky.
The first dogs were british imports, forming the basis of the so-called 'virgina hound' - later the walker hound. In the 1800s, the line was crossed with a stolen tennessee dog of unknown heritage, known as Tennessee Lead. He may have looked different, but he was an excellent hunter and heavily influenced the breed.
The treeing walker was recognized as a sepearate breed from the Walker by the UKC in 1945.
The breed should appear balanced, with the head and tail carried high. The breed's temperament is described as 'Energetic, intelligent, active, courteous, composed, confident, fearless, kind, graceful in pose and while active. Super abundance of sense, endurance, trailing, hunting and treeing instinct and ability'.
