The cavalier king charles spaniel is essentially a miniature hunting spaniel, and originates from breeds like the kooikerhondje. Cavalier-like dogs can be seen on numerous medieval paintings, but in the early 1900s the breed had almost disappeared. It was successfully reconstructed by a few dedicated breeders, "cavalier" was added in front of the name to distinguish it from the english toy spaniel (which is also called king charles spaniel) and the breed was formally recognized in 1945.
The cavalier should be a small, graceful and well-balanced miniature spaniel with a gentle expression. A smaller dog is preferred over a large. The muzzle should be relatively short, with well developed lips and strong jaws. The neck of moderate length, slightly arched, the back level with moderate chest. The coat should be long, silky and free from curl, the ears and feet especially should be well-feathered.
The personality of the breed should be friendly, fearless and happy-going, never nervous or aggressive
