Notes

The Karelian bear dog, famous for its sharp temperament, is believed to originate from the so-called Komi dog, also known as the dog of the Zyrians. The basic stock for the breed, however, came from the dogs of Lagoda's Karelia, Olonets Karelia and Russian Karelia, all used for different types of game hunting. The first standard was written in 1945, and today the breed is common in Finland. It is also seen in the rest of Scandinavia, but rarely outside Europe.
The Karelian bear dog is a strong hunting dog and does generally make a good companion dog only, but requires large amounts of exercise and stimulation. It does partically well for large game hunting, such as bear- and moose-hunting.

The Karelian bear dog should appear medium size, rectangular, powerful and slightly reserved. The head is triangular lacking sharp stop with deep muzzle and dry lips. The eyes have an alert expression. The ears are of medium size, erect with slightly rounded tips. The neck is of medium length, muscular and slightly arched. The body is powerful and agile, with well developed chest and straight back. Slight tuck up. The tail is bushy, set high and carried curled enough to touch the back. Some Karelian bear dogs are born with a bobtail. This is not faulted in the show ring.
