Notes

The german leonberger was bred by Heinrich Essig in the town Leonberg in Germany, in the 1840's. By crossing a landseer (black/white) newfoundland with a saint bernard he got the base for what would later become the modern leonberger. Pyrenean mountain dog was crossed in later as well. Essig wanted to create a large, powerful dog that would resemble Leonberg's town crest lion.

In 1846 the first puppies were born that carried the name 'leonberger', and soon the breed gained enormous popularity and was exported all over the world. It was recognized in 1895.

The leonberger should appear to be a large, strong dog with a friendly temperament. The ears is powerful with moderate stop and powerful jaws. The top of muzzle may be straight or slightly convex. Rather deep and rounded muzzle. The eyes should have a friendly expression. The ears are set high and carried close to the head. The neck is powerful and noble, carrying the head high and proud. The body is slightly rectangular, with deep chest and strong back. The coat is soft to hard, forming a ruff on the neck and chest.
