The norwegian lundehund, also known as 'lunnehund' or 'puffindog' has long been used to hunt puffins in Vaeroy and Röst in Norway. The breed is believed to be related to the norwegian buhund and possibly small laikas. It has, over a time span of several hundred years, adapted perfectly for its job, and today sports three unique features not found in any other breed of dog: Two extra developed toes on each foot, the ability to close its ear canals completely, and an extremely flexible neck allowing the dog to bend its head backwards until it is touching its back. On top of this the breed is highly agile and alert.

The lundehund should be rectangular, agile with oval paws. The head is wedge-shaped with a relatively short muzzle. The ears are pointed erect. The neck is rather short and very muscular, with a deep and long chest. The tail is set high but fairly short and carried in a curl or hanging. The coat is thick and coarse with a soft undercoat.
