Notes

Tiny dogs were kept by the Mayas of Mexico over 600 years ago, as well as by the Toltecs during the 1100's. These dogs were known as 'techichu', and were kept as companions, as food and were also sacrificed to gods. When they died, the dogs were buried together with their owners.
It is believed that the modern chihuahua has been partially mixed up with european, and possibly chinese toy dogs that came with Columbus and other explorers. It is a mexican breed, but the modern chihuahua was bred and formed in the USA.

Despite its small size, the chihuahua should appear healthy and well built. The head is round with marked stop and rounded forehead. The muzzle should be short and straight. The eyes are large and expressive. The ears are large, set low and standing out from the head. The body is compact, slightly rectangular, plane and horizontal with deep chest and slight tuck up. The tail is set high and characteristically broader at the middle than by the base.
