Notes

The Persian is the epitome of the show cat. With their luxurious fluffy coat, sweet open faces and gentle personalities, it’s absolutely no surprise that the Persian reigns supreme over the show ring...and has since the very first cat shows. Over time breeders have developed the iconic extreme type—the flat face and over-the-top coat. This is not a breed for the faint of heart when it comes to grooming, and exhibitors guard their bathing secrets carefully. Even Persians who are only Best Cat of their home require daily combing and face cleaning to prevent mats and eye infections.

Today’s Persian includes a number of different varieties, notably the Himalayan and the Chinchilla. The Himalayan was developed in the 1950s through select crosses to Siamese, and remained a separate breed entirely for many decades before being integrated with the main Persian breed. Chinchilla Persians (silvers and goldens) rarely outcross to other colours in order to preserve the unique green eye colour, intense eye and nose liner, and tipping quality. Consequently they are a more old-fashioned style of Persian, with a smaller body, longer or lower nose, and larger ears.

Persians easily adapt to new environments, but they are creatures of habit happiest in an atmosphere of security and serenity. They are not the most intelligent of breeds (some call them “furniture with fur”) but you don’t need brains to look good, as Persians have proven for decades! They are not natural jumpers or climbers; they do run, even with all that fur, but they rarely attempt climbing or counter-surfing.

Type & judging remarks
The Persian should present an impression of a heavily-boned, well-balanced cat with a sweet expression and soft, round, lines. The long, thick double coat softens the lines of the cat and accentuates the roundness in appearance. Underneath the coat is short, cobby body set on short legs with substantial boning. The face is a circle with the nose placed perfectly in the centre, and the eyes evenly spaced on either side; the ears fit neatly into the overall circle of the head.
