Notes

The chow chow most likely originates from local eurasian spitzes, that have been around for as long as anyone can remember. It did however go through selective breeding as far back as several hundreds of years ago, and was bred to look as fearsome as possible. The chow chow was believed to protect people from evil spirits, and even when it was gone from the temples it lived on in the small villages where people still believed in its powers.
The chow chow was most likely the first chinese spitz that reached Britain, which was in the 1700's. Its name comes from slang for 'food', and the chow chow was indeed sometimes eaten.

The chow chow should have a large and broad skull, with slightly marked stop and broad muzzle. The ears are small, rounded, stiffly erect and set wide apart. Together with the small ears and other features of the face, they should give the breed a somewhat grumpy expression. The neck is slightly arched, strong and muscular. The body has a deep and broad chest with a short and straight back. The hind legs are unusually straight in this breed. The coat can be short or long, always longer on the neck and backside of hind legs.
