Notes

The pekingese was bred to resemble the chinese dragon as well as the lion, and lived in the royal palace.
When the palace was invaded in 1860, some of the little dogs were brought back to Britain, among them a dog named Looty that was given as a gift to queen Victoria. There was also a miniature variety, known as 'sleeve dog', for they could fit in the kimono sleeves. These dogs can are still born occasionally in otherwise normal-sized pekingese litters. The breed gained popularity extremely quickly and has been well-known around the world since.

The pekingese should have a large and broad head, with short and broad muzzle. Typical is a well-developed wrinkle right above the muzzle. The profile should be flat with an upturned muzzle and good amount of stop. The eyes should be large and clear. The ears are heart-shaped, set high and carried closed to the head. The neck is very short and powerful. The body is short with straight back and broad chest. Short, powerful legs. The tail is set high and carried curved over the back. The coat is long, straight and forming a thick mane over the neck.
