Notes

Dogs resembling english springers can be seen on very early paintings and images. Together with the welsh springer and the clumber, it is the oldest spaniel. The breed's name comes from its style of hunting. The dog will mark where the bird is hiding, and at the hunter's command it scares the bird into the air - it springs. The english springer spaniel was recognized as a breed in 1902. It is a highly active breed that loves to work and requires daily stimulation.

The english springer spaniel is the leggiest spaniel breed. It should be compact, symmetrical and lively. The head is of medium length, rather broad with quite broad and deep muzzle. The eyes should have a friendly expression. The ears are set at eye height, drop-shaped and carried close to the head. The neck is of medium length, dry and strong. The body is of medium length with a deep chest and short back. The tail is set low and should preferably not be carried high above the back. The movements are very characteristic for the breed, with a very powerful trot. During walks, many springers prefer to pace. The coat is thick, straight and dirt and water repellant, longer on the ears, backside of legs and underside.
