Notes

The only naturally-occurring spotted cat, the Egyptian Mau is an active, colourful cat with a regal bearing. They are reserved with strangers and may seem nervous in the show hall, but they are very outgoing and confident within their home territory and make wonderful companions. They have been called the Abyssinian’s gentle cousin; although the two breeds are not related, their personalities are very similar. Their origins are somewhat obscure; breeders claim that they descend from cats imported from the streets of Cairo, but others insist that the Mau is not in fact natural but created. The high rates of spotted tabby in Egypt do suggest that some importation may have been involved and at any rate, the romantic story of the Mau as the very same cat worshipped by the ancients is very appealing to its fans.

Type & judging remarks
They are very muscular, with a well-balanced body and temperament. The type is moderate, with ears should be set high on the head. A loose skin flap extends from the flank to the knee, but the cat must not have excessive skin elsewhere. Pattern calls for any shape of spots so long as they are distinct and clearly defined.
