Notes

Archeological findings show that very large dogs have been found on Ireland for hundreds of years. Much suggests that it was the celts that brought these majestic canines to the island between 500 and 300 years B.C.When the wolf disappeared from Ireland in the 1700's, the wolfhound lost its former popularity and more or less disappeared. In 1814 R.D Richardson asked after the wolfhounds in the Irish Penny Journal, and Bran was a found, a dog that is viewed as the link between the original irish wolfhound and the modern version.
It was mainly thanks to G.A Graham's work in the late 1800's that the irish wolfhound is still found today. A breed club was started in 1885, but the breed wasn't recognized until 1920, when the Irish Kennel Club was founded.

The irish wolfhound shouldn't be as heavy as the great dane, but have more mass than the scottish deerhound. The head is long with slight stop and long muzzle. The ears are small rose ears. The neck is rather long, powerful and strong. The chest is very deep and broad, with good tuck up and rather long back. The tail is long and curved. The coat is wirey and hard on the body, longer above the eyes and the jaw.
