Notes

The manchester terrier originates from crosses between the old english black and tan terrier and small sighthounds, most likely from the 1850-60's. It was originally known as 'black and tan terrier' and was recognized under that name in 1860. The breed was common in the Manchester area, and it was later recognized under the name 'manchester terrier' as well, a name that soon became the most popular.

The manchester was originally kept as a ratter, and people would bet on how many rats it could kill within a given time. It was also a popular show dog, but over time it lost popularity, for its standard was so strict when it came to the colours that few dogs were given prizes, and when cropping was made illegal in Britain many breeders lost interest in it as well. Today the manchester terrier is perhaps not as common as it once was, but it has a good number of fans around the world.

The manchester terrier should be compact, healthy, elegant and agile. It should appear lively, alert, happy and sporty. The head is long, thin and wedge-shaped. The ears are small and V-shaped, carried close to the head. The neck is rather long and arched. The body is short with deep and thin chest and slightly raised topline. The tail is short and carried like a continuation of the back. The coat is short, hard and glossy.
