Notes

The french bulldog is believed to be a miniature version of the english, but spanish fighting dogs are also mentioned in its history, as well as tiny mexican or peruan dogs that are said to have come with explorers when they returned home after their travels. The french bulldog's unusual ear shape is the main reason the south american dogs have been mentioned.

During the 1800's, the french bulldog was a fashion breed among the artists and actors in Paris, and it is said that some drivers made extra money by selling french bulldogs to their customers.
The breed club was formed in 1880 and the breed was shown in british dog shows, but the brits were not impressed at all, for they already had a miniature version of the bulldog! The french variety won the popularity contest, however, and can now be found all over the world.

The french bulldog is a small, powerful and compact breed. The head is square shaped with a short, broad muzzle. The eyes have a lively expression, the ears are of medium size with rounded tips, so called bat ears. The body is rounded. The highest point of the topline should be over the rear. The chest is deep, with moderate tuck up. The tail is short and set low. The coat is short, soft and glossy.
