Notes

The dogue de bordeaux might be the oldest french breed, but like the case is with many breeds, its past is not known for certain. It most likely originated from the large celtic hunting mastiffs. These dogs were also kept as guard dogs, fighting dogs and as cattle herders.
When the first dog show was held in France in 1863, the dogue de bordeaux was entered. It came in several varities, however, including one with cropped ears and one that resembled a bloodhound, but the type from Bordeaux was the most common and is the one we know today. The breed almost died out during the Second World War but was saved for the afterworld by dedicated breeders, and can now be seen outside France as well.

The dogue de bordeaux should appear very powerful with harmonious proportions, rather low and muscular. The head is very large, broad and rather short. The stop is very clearly marked. The muzzle is broad with slightly hanging lips on strong jaws. The eyes have a peaceful expression. The ears are small and set high which makes the head look even broader. The neck should be cylindrical and well muscled with visible dewlap. The topline should be straight, with a deep and broad chest and visible tuck up. The tail is very coarse and the root and gradually tapering. The coat is fine, short and soft.
