Notes
The sussex spaniel belongs to the land spaniel group and was named after Sussex in southern England. It is an old breed that was mentioned by its current name in the 1700's and was quite well-known until the 1830's. The most important stud ever was Bebb from the 1860's, a dog that is found in 90 % of all modern sussex spaniel pedigrees. Two other dogs from this time are found in the modern pedigrees as well, Bachelor (born 1875) and Buckingham. The breed has been close to extinction several times, and the only one person kept the breed alive during the second world, Joyce Freer, who bred sussex spaniels until 1976, and cared deeply for the breed until her death in 1984.
The sussex spaniel should be massive and powerful, yet agile and energetic. The skull is broad with marked stop and rounded muzzle. The eyes are rather large with a friendly expression. The ears are thick, rather large and drop-shaped. The neck is long and strong, carrying the head and roughly back level. The body is deep and well developed, with virtually no tuck up. Rather short legs with moderate angulation. The tail is set low and should not be carried over the back. The coat is long and straight.
