This breed’s curled-back ears make it unique among cat breeds. The first American Curl, a black longhaired female named Shulamith, was discovered in California in 1981. Curls are elegant, well-balanced, slender cats with an alert, active, yet gentle disposition. They are born with straight ears, with the curl developing at about 3-5 days and achieving its adult position at around sixteen weeks of age. Initially, breeding was hesitant as there was a fear that the curled ear was related to the gene that causes folded ears, but in December 1989 a report was published proving conclusively that American Curls are safe to breed, and their popularity has grown since. Their development, like other American breeds, has relied on domestic outcrosses rather than combining pedigreed breeds; the American Curl sought not to emulate any other breed but to become its own, modelled closely on the type of its founder, Shulamith.
Type & judging remarks
The ear must appear flexible and rounded, with no stiff sections. The rest of the cat is moderate and smooth, neither foreign nor cobby and yet consistent and identifiably American Curl.
