Notes

The shikoku (also once known as 'shika' or 'kochi-ken' was originall mostly kept as a watch and hunting dog in the mountainous Kishu area. It hunted mainly boar. At one time, there were three varieties of the breed: Awa, Hata-all and Hongawa - the last was said to be the purest. The shikoku was proclaimed a national symbol in 1937. Today the breed is rather common in Japan.

The shikoku should have a wedge-shaped head with slight stop and rather long muzzle. The ears are small and stiffly erect, carried slightly forward. The tail should be powerful, tightly curled or curved over the back. The coat consists of a soft undercoat and a straight, hard topcoat.
