Notes

The Korat (Koh-raht, rhymes with hot) is a rare cat even in Thailand, its country of origin. Its unusually fine disposition makes it greatly loved by the Thai people. It is named for the Korat province, where it was discovered; in Thailand it is known as the Si-Sawat. The earliest known record of the Korat appears in the Cat-book of Poems, or Smud Khoi of Cat, produced sometime during the Ayudhaya period (1350-1767 CE), and describes it as one of Thailand’s seventeen “good luck” cats. It was first developed in Thailand, at Mahajaya Cattery, making it one of the first Asian breeds to be actually developed in Asia, and imported to America in 1959 where it was accepted in 1966.

Like the Siamese, the Korat is a very opinionated and intelligent cat. They are often at a disadvantage in the show hall, as their minority status can make them a “hard sell” for many judges; their tendency towards being very loud when voicing their opinions on judges might not be helping matters!

Type & judging remarks
The Korat is all smooth curves with huge eyes that are luminous, alert and expressive with an Asian slant. It is neither compact nor svelte, with its back carried in a curve. As it is a traditional Thai cat, a tail kinks are common in the breed, and unlike in the modern Siamese, where no trace of the original kink is permitted, the Korat standard allows non-visible kinks to the tail. The body is a series of hearts: heart-shaped head, heart-shaped nose, and heart-shaped top-head.
