Notes

This dog has been depicted on walls from ca 1575 - 1087 B.C, and it's known that Tutankhamun loved to hunt wih his dogs, which bore close resemblance to the modern pharaoh hound. The dogs probably came to Egypt via Malta, Gozo, Ibiza and Sicily with the fenicians. The pharaoh hound was more or less forgotten for many years, and lived as a hunting dog on Malta. It was imported to Great Britain during the early 1900's, but it wasn't until the 1960's that it gained any popularity.

The pharaoh hound was originally bred for hunting hare and rabbit, using both its sight and keen hearing, but in the West it is mostly kept as a companion dog.

The pharaoh hound should be of medium size, noble with dry, pure lines, elegant yet powerful. The head is long and dry, with little stop, shaped like a rounded wedge. The eyes have a lively expression. The ears are broad at the base, thin and large. The neck is long, thin and muscular. Deep chest with tuck up and almost straight topline. Straight frontlegs with well angulated hind. The coat is short and glossy, varying in texture from fine to rather coarse.
