Notes

Originally a working cat, the Maine Coon is solid, rugged, and can endure a harsh climate. A distinctive characteristic is its smooth, shaggy coat. Although it is a massive cat, quality should never be sacrificed for size and no feature should be exaggerated. Its essentially amiable disposition makes it the gentle giant of the cat fancy; Maine Coons generally weigh between 17 and 25 pounds, and large neuters have been known to reach 30 pounds! They are long, long cats, but with size and substance that makes them powerhouses with the ability to bring down lemmings, groundhogs, and even rabbits. They are America’s native longhaired cat, the New World member of the forest cat trio and the state cat of Maine. They were very popular at the first American cat shows in the nineteenth century, but imported Persians and Angoras soon superseded them in popularity, so much so that they were thought nearly extinct in the 1950s. However rumours of their death were greatly exaggerated, and dedicated breeders brought this elegant and rugged cat to CFA in 1976. Today they are often the largest entry at any show, no matter where in the world you find yourself!

Type & judging remarks
The body shape of a Maine Coon is rectangular and boxy. The muzzle is strong, with a boxy profile and ears set right on top of the head, an ear-width apart. The body is a long rectangle, and the tail is as long as the body or longer.

Notes: This file comes in Large and Small, Tall and Short, Heavy and Light, Ruffed and Unruffed, Belly and No Belly variations. PKC accepts all of the variations. However the Short variations plus Large Heavy Short are highly preferred over the remaining 3 Large variations. The Small variations are included in the "Show" version of Vickie's file. The only preferred Large variation is in the other version of Vickie's file. Differences are highlighted here for registrars. The 3 less preferred Large variations are highly faulted. For more complete examples of sizes and more info, see the chart on Vickie's site. The bicolour pattern crossed out is not PKC registerable. For colours - the tabbies/torbies in this file may have lighter tabby cheeks/jowls to represent lighter fur.
