Notes

The rottweiler, one of the world's most famous breeds, was originally bred as a cattle herder and was known as the 'butcherdog of Rottweil', a city in Germany. Many believe it to be the purest decendant of the ancient roman herding dogs, which in return originated from even older molossoid dogs.

When it was made illegal to drive cattle on the roads in the 1800's, the rottweiler lost in popularity, and in 1905 only one female was left in the city. In 1910 the rottweiler was declared a police dog, and in 1924 it was recognized. Since then the rottweiler has grown in popularity and now it is found all over the world.

The rottweiler should have a medium length head, with broad skull and marked stop. The muzzle should be as long as the head, with dry lips. The ears are set high and wide apart, rather small and triangular. The neck is powerful, dry and muscular. The body should have a deep chest with straight back and little tuck up. Straight frontlegs, well angulated hind. The tail is short and powerful, either docked or natural. The coat is medium length, thick with coarse topcoat and thick undercoat.
