Notes

The border terrier originates from the border areas between England and Scotland, especially the remote Cheviot Hills, and it represents a type of dog that has been known for several hundred years. A painting from 1750 shows earthdog similar to the modern border terrier.
It was during the 1800's that the interest for these terriers awoke, and it is largely thanks to the families Robson and Dodd that the border terrier went from hunting terrier to purebred dog. It was recognized in 1920 and Simon Dodd and Jacob Robson were among the first breed judges.

The border terrier should have an otter-like head, with broad skull and short, powerful muzzle. The eyes should have a lively expression. The ears are small, V-shaped and carried close to the head. The body should be deep and thin, as the breed must be able to be spanned. The tail is quite short and thick, carried relatively high but not over the back. The dog should be built so that it can follow a horse without problems. The coat is wirey and thick.
