Notes

One of the most established cat breeds, the Russian Blue has a unique silver-tipped blue coat. They are gentle and quiet, with a remarkable sensitivity to their owner’s needs. Originating in the Archangel Isles in northern Russia, it was first exhibited at London’s Crystal Palace in 1875 as the “Archangel Cat”, and competed against blue cats of all types, including British Shorthairs and Korats. In 1912, it was given a separate class in shows, although it was not until after World War II that North Americans really discovered the Russian Blue with all its charm, and in 1949 it was accepted with CFA. Although the breed suffered from temperament problems during the 1980s, the breed has since recovered, although the Russian Blue remains a quiet and reserved cat who is wary of strangers.

The Russian Blue is a rare breed, although many owners of ordinary shelter cats insist their cat is a Russian Blue or Russian Blue mix. In reality, these cats are often common blue shorthairs that, while striking, are entirely separate from the pedigreed Russian Blue and should not be confused.

Type & judging remarks
It is a cat of semi-foreign build, with an overall svelte but not Oriental look. The head is a medium wedge blending into a blunt muzzle, and has a two-plane profile with a Mona Lisa smile. Even tipping across the body.
