The portugese pointer's, or perdiguero portugêse's, past is not fully known, but hints have been found that suggest that it has been around since at least the 1400's. It most likely originate from asian dogs, and has survived as an excellent gundog. The portugese hunter loves to work and is very active and alert while doing so. It is a typical hunter and does not adapt well to apartment life.
The portuguese pointer should be of medium size, slightly rectangular, elegant and powerful. The head is balanced with a clearly marked stop and dishface. The eyes should have a lively expression. The ears are of medium length, hanging and softly rounded at the tips. The neck is straight, dry and elegan. Deep and rather broad chest, with short and straight back. Normal angulation in front and hind legs. The coat is short, strong and thick, lacking undercoat.
