Notes

The flat coated retriever originates from crossings between different british gundogs and the canadian Saint John-dog, crossings that took place during the 1800's. At this time, it was known as 'wavy coat retriever' as its coat used to be wavy, rather than straight. To get a lighter dog, the wavy coat was bred to black setters, and during the late 1800's it had become the most popular retriever breed. During the Second World War the flat coat's numbers lessened greatly, but it has now begun to climb in popularity once more.

The flat coated retriever should appear medium sized, active and friendly. The head is long and noble, with a flat skull and little stop. Long and powerful muzzle. The ears are small, set close to the head. The neck is long and dry, gradually connecting to the body, with a deep chest. Muscular legs with normal angulation. The tail is short, straight and carried happily but not too high. The coat should be as straight as possible.
