The great pyrenees (sometimes called pyrenean mountain dog) most likely originates from dogs brought to Europe with immigranting asians that came several thousands ago. It comes from large, longhaired mongolian and tibetan dogs, such as the tibetan mastiff. French artist Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) has helped to define where different mountain dogs come from, and he drew the Pyr as well. His painting 'La chasse aux loups' show two large white dogs fighting two wolves. The breed has also been depicted by Maud Earl (from 1901) and Rosa Bonheur (1822-99).
In the beginning of the 1900's the breed became very popular, which proved to be dangerous - at one point there were only 6 patou-dogs left in the mountains ('patou' was what the breed was called before the official breedname was decided upon). The breed was restored after the 1920's, mainly thanks to Bernard Seamac-Legrange (1880-1954) who organized all pyr breedings in France.
The great pyrenees should appear large and impressive. The head is broad with a powerful muzzle and dry lips. The eyes should have a calm and wondering expression. The ears are small, triangular and carried close to the head. The neck is relatively short. The chest is of medium depth, with moderate tuck up. The front legs are straight while the hind have moderate angulation. The tail is often carried hanging when the dog is still, during movement it forms the typical 'pyrenean wheel'. The coat should be thick and quite long, especially on tail and around the neck.
