Notes

The gordon setter was named after Gordon Castle, which lies north of Aberdeen in Scotland. Black and tan setters with white toes and chest have been known in Scotland for hundreds of years, since at least the 1600's. When the breed gained popularity as a show dog, the white-marked dogs were no longer desired and the gene pool lessened dramatically. Since then the gordon setter has never gained the popularity of the irish and english setters. It is still kept as a dedicated hunter in different countries in Europe, however.

The gordon is the largest of the setter breeds. It is elegant and agile. The head is dry, deeper than it is broad, with clearly marked stop and muzzle slightly shorter than the skull. The eyes are rather large with a lively expression. The ears are set low and carried close to the head. The neck is long, dry and slightly arched. Well developed chest with medium length body. The tail is rather short and preferably carried at height of backline or lower.
