The beauceron, also once commonly called "red-stockings" is an ancient french herding dog. This breed is one of the main ingredients in the far more well-known doberman, and it was known in the past for having a very sharp temperament. The modern beauceron is milder and more trainable, an excellent working dog that is winning recognition around the world as a highly capable service dog. It was originally bred to be a sheep herder and flock guardian.
The beauceron should be large, powerful, robust and muscular. The head has a slight stop, slightly convex muzzle and high set ears, either cropped or natural. The eyes should have a gentle expression. The neck is of medium length and powerful. The body is rectangular with a deep chest and straight back. The tail is carried in a slight J-shape. The coat is short on the face, somewhat longer, thick and hard, on the rest of the body.
