Large mastiff-like dogs have been found for thousands of years, but it is not known for certain how these dogs came to Britain. They might have come with the romans and have been mixed up with local scruffy-haired british dogs. They have been kept as fighting dogs as well as hunters for large game, such as bear and lion.
In the 1800's the english mastiff was of very poor quality, but a few dedicated breeders managed to save it, and by crossing in saint bernard, the breed was saved, but it changed its look somewhat, turning it overall heavier.
The mastiff is large, powerful, compact, brave and friendly. The head is broad with a well marked stop and short, broad and rounded muzzle. The ears are set wide apart and small and thin. The neck is medium length and very powerful. The chest is deep and long with very slight tuck up. Well angulated, powerful and heavy-boned legs. The tail is set high, reaching down to the hock or longer. The coat is short, thick and close-laying.
