Coat

Solid:

Sable: Red or chocolate sable in any of the patterns, with

allowed as additional base colours in Red Sable and

allowed as an additional base colour in Liver Sable.
Tan:

with

markings in the traditional, creeping or saddle pattern, but the saddle pattern is faulted.
Masking: All of the above may be masked (any mask type). The mask is

, matching the pigment of the rest of the dog. Solid Red/Cream dogz can be masked with any of the colours.
Urajiro: Allowed on all of the above.
White Markings: Must have

at least as a small chest patch. May also have any degree of trim, Irish Spotting, blanket, or piebald. May have a predominately white head. Overall, white should not predominate.

Notes

The icelandic sheepdog is believed to originate from dogs brought to Iceland during the 800's by vikings. It is a superb herder and good watch dog but lacks hunting instinct. The breed was mentioned in literature during the 1500's, but almost disappeared in the early 1900's when many of the dogs got ill and died or had to be put to sleep. Thirty years later it was time for the next epedemic, and it was illegal to keep dogs in the cities. This, plus the fact that the breed was mixed up with other breeds, almost caused the extinction of the iceland dog. Surprisingly enough, it was thanks to british dogs that the breed was saved. Englishman Watson got the breed FCI-recognized in 1956 after breeding dogs that he had collected on Iceland during the 1950's. The Icelandic Kennel Club was formed in 1969 with one goal: to save the Iceland dog.

The iceland dog should be a typical spitz, slightly rectangular, lively, alert, curious and brave. The 'smile' is typical for the breed. The head is rather broad with rounded skull and clear stop. The muzzle is rather short. The eyes shoul have a lively, confident expression. The ears are triangular and set wide apart. The powerful neck carries the head high. The body is rectangular, powerful but not coarse, with deep chest and visible tuck up. The tail is set high and curled. The coat can be short or medium long.
