Aloysius is a Latinized mangling of the French name Louis. It is also the name of a 16th century Italian saint, Aloysius Gonzaga, and basically means "a warrior". Today the name is considered to be Germanic. Aloysius's show name was inspired by the Oscar Wilde play, "The Importance of Being Earnest".
