Notes

The swedish hounds originate from continental hounds that came to Sweden mainly during the 1600-1700's via home-returning soldiers. During the 1800's, german and swiss hounds were bred into the scandinavian hounds, as well a british breeds like the foxhound, harrier and beagle, forming the modern swedish breeds.
The breed was earlier known as 'swedish stövare' ('stövare' is the swedish term for 'hound') but was renamed in 1921 in honour of one of the most important name behind the breed, Adolf Patrik Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club.
The hamilton is mainly a hare- and foxhound. It drives the prey by following its scent on a trail towards the hunter while barking loudly, which requires a powerful brisket and strong bark. It is one of the most trainable hounds and is famous for its good mentality.

The hamiltonstovare is a rectangular-shaped hound, powerful and with great endurance. The head is elongated with a clear stop and long muzzle. The eyes have a calm expression. The ears are set rather high and carried close to the head. The neck is long, powerful and dry. The body is of medium length, with straight back, deep chest and slight tuck up. The coat is short and thick.
