Notes

The german shepherd is the world's most popular breed, and was formed roughly 100 years ago in a strict breeding project using local sheepdogs. These came in many varities, but all were good workers, and when the first dog 'breeds' got their standards and rose in popularity around the world, german breeeders wanted to create their own breed as well.
When the first german dog show was held in 1899, two men, Max von Stephanitz and Artur Meyer, found a greyish fawn dog that impressed them greatly. This dog stood model for the german shepherd standard when the the breed club was form later that same year. The dog's name was Horand von Grafrath.
The famous sieger ('winner') shows were held by the club from the start, and they are still an important event for the breed. Over 2 million german shepherds are said to have been entered in the stud book since the club was started in april 1899.

The german shepherd should appear medium sized, strong and muscular. The head is powerful without being coarse, the top of the muzzle almost parallell with the top of the head. The eyes have a lively expression. The ears are of medium size, set high, carried erect and slightly forward. The neck is strong and muscular. The body should be rectangular, with a deep and long chest and slight tuck up. The back should be sloping gently towards the rear. The coat is thick, hard and straight.
