Notes
The dogo argentino was bred mainly in Córdoba, Argentina. The breed's creator, Dr. Antonio Nores Marinez, wanted to create a tough and brave hunting dog to hunt cougar, jaguar and wild pigs. During the 1920's he crossed an old type of fighting dog which originated from crossings between bull terriers, bulldoggs and mastiffs. What was meant to be a fighting dog instead became an excellent hunting dog, according to Dr Martinez. The breed also proved to be an excellent watch dog.
The dogo argentino was recognized by Argentina's Kennel Club in 1964.
The dogo should appear rather large, very powerful and awesome. The head is massive with powerful jaws and heavy lips. A dish face is typical. The eyes should have a lively expression. The ears can be cropped or natural, natural ears are set high and carried close to the head. The neck is strong with thick skin. The chest is deep and long, with a slightly sloping topline. The tail is long and coarse. The coat is short, hard and glossy.
