Notes

The dachshund, appreciated for its will to hunt and moderate speed, and small enough to work as an earthdog, may have originated from old european hounds. Originally, only the smooths were considered to be purebred, and in the first standard, written in 1879, only this type of coat is mentioned. The longhair is however a very old type of coat within the breed. The wirehair, on the other hand, was at one point close to extinction, and dandie dinmont terrier and schnauzer was crossed in, as part of a breeding project to restore it.
The dachshund is famous for having an iron will, but it is also a good companion dog that enjoys walks without requiring vast amounts of exercise.

The head should be elongated with dry lips. The eyes have a calm expression. The ears are set high, carried hanging. The body is long, muscular and dry with a strong back and somewhat arched neck. The chest is long, with an almost oval shape. Slight tuck up. The legs are well angulated. The coat can be smooth, wire or long. There are three sizes of dachshund: Standard, miniature and rabbit.
