The brazilian terrier, like many, originates from foxterrier stock. It is said to have been developed from british terriers brought to Brazil with students by the end of the 1800s or early 1900s, when they went through education at the british universities. They often loved horses and hunting and the little hunting terriers were perfect companions during the studies.
When they settled on brazilian farms, the dogs bred with local canines, meaning the modern brazilian terrier more or less developed on its own.
The famous family Junqueira, who first showed the world the horse breed Manga Larga have also spread the knowledge about the 'terrier brasileiro'.
The brazilian terrier should be an agile, square-shaped breed and must never look coarse or low. The head is triangular with a rounded skull, the muzzle powerful. The ears are set broad on the head and carried V-shaped or as rose ears. The chest is rather long and fairly deep. The topline is slightly sloping. The tail is set low and docked in the country of origin. The temperament is very active and lively.
