Notes

This breed is also know as the American Pit Bull Terrier but is called the American Staffordshire Terrier in the PKC. It origiantes from crosses between bulldogs and terriers, and was once bred to be a fighting dog. The dogs were known as 'yankee terrier', 'american bull terrier' or 'pit bull terrier'.
The amstaffie was recognized in the 1936 as 'american staffordshire terrier' to honour its heritage to the british staffordshire bullterrier. Today it is kept as a cuddly show and companion dog.

The american staffordshire terrier should have a medium length head with broad skull and very well developed muzzle and strong jaws. The ears can be cropped or natural - natural ears should be carried half or fully erect, while drop ears are faulted. The neck is of medium length, dry and powerful. The back is short and slightly sloping towards the rear, with a deep and long chest. The tail is short and set low.
