The spunky little toy fox terrier originates from small rat terriers crossed with toy breeds such as the manchester terrier and the chihuahua. It is an agile and active dog, still tough enough to be a hunter but equally happy as a companion dog. It will be just as happy on the field as in the lap of its owner, and is always ready to have some fun.
The toy fox terrier resembles a rat terrier, but is overall smaller and more petite. It should appear square in built, with a compact body and short tail that is carried upright. The appearance should be elegant, balanced and aristocratic, above all looking like a true terrier.
The head should resemble a blunt wedge, with a gradually tapering muzzle. The eyes should have a soft, intelligent expression. The ears are pointed inverted V-shapes, held closed together but never touching.
The neck is clean and slightly arched into the short and straight back, with a deep chest. The tail is set high and carried above the horizontal line of the back.
